BorgWarner Expands Hungarian Plant with HUF 24bn Investment in Oroszlány

At a time when Hungary is consumed by election fever, the media attention often misses what really matters, here I’m referring to the good things that affect the people of Hungary, and this news is big. US-based automotive supplier BorgWarner has inaugurated a HUF 24 billion development manufacturing base in Oroszlány, further reinforcing Hungary’s role as a key hub in Europe’s automotive supply chain.

The project, supported by a HUF 4.8 billion government grant, has increased the plant’s workforce to around 1,000 employees, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Expanding Product Portfolio

The Oroszlány facility, already known for producing turbochargers, will now expand its operations to include components for cabin heating systems.

This diversification reflects broader changes in the automotive industry, where suppliers are adapting to new technologies and evolving vehicle requirements, including electrification and improved energy efficiency.

By broadening its product range, BorgWarner is positioning its Hungarian plant to play a more versatile role within its global manufacturing network.

Strengthening Hungary’s Automotive Ecosystem

Speaking at the inauguration, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó highlighted Hungary’s continued attractiveness for automotive investment.

He noted that the country is one of the few globally where all three major German premium car manufacturers — including brands such as BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz — maintain production bases.

In addition, Hungary hosts several other automotive plants, creating a dense network of manufacturers and suppliers.

This ecosystem has made the country a preferred destination for automotive suppliers, contributing to the creation of tens of thousands of jobs over recent years.

US Investment and Trade Ties

The BorgWarner project is part of a broader trend of growing US investment in Hungary.

According to government data, 16 American investments worth around HUF 200 billion were launched in Hungary in the past year alone.

Bilateral trade between Hungary and the United States also reached a record USD 10 billion, underlining the strength of economic ties between the two countries.

US companies represent a significant presence in Hungary’s industrial landscape, particularly in sectors such as automotive, technology and manufacturing.

Job Creation and Regional Impact

As mentioned above, the expansion in Oroszlány has increased employment at the site to approximately 1,000 workers, supporting the local economy and reinforcing the region’s industrial base.

Western Hungary has long been a focal point for manufacturing investment, benefiting from its proximity to major European markets and established infrastructure.

Projects like this not only provide direct employment but also support a wider network of suppliers and service providers.

Hungary’s Competitive Position

Hungary continues to position itself as a leading manufacturing hub in Central Europe, offering a combination of skilled labour, strategic location and supportive investment policies.

The concentration of automotive production in the country has created a strong industrial cluster, attracting both manufacturers and suppliers.

Government officials argue that maintaining this momentum is essential for long-term economic growth and competitiveness.

With its expanded capacity and broader product portfolio, BorgWarner’s Oroszlány facility is set to play an increasingly important role within the company’s European operations.

For Hungary, the investment reinforces its position within the global automotive supply chain, highlighting the country’s ability to attract and retain large-scale industrial projects.

As the automotive industry continues to evolve, developments like this suggest that Hungary will remain a key player — where innovation, manufacturing and international investment come together to drive growth.
